Blog Spotlight: Instructor and Design Team Member Susan Allen!

From Susan:

I have always loved to scrapbook ever since I was young. Scrapbooking has been a hobby in our family for 3 generations. When I was little my Grandmother and Mother both made scrapbooks. I loved to just look at them and see what my relatives looked like that I hadn't seen before. My Grandmother had a black photo album with black pages in it. She even used a white ink pen. Where did she get that pen?! To this day the photos and the album look like she just completed it, it looks that new. My Mother made albums with cards , postcards and she did scrapbooking while she was growing up. She would make me albums and cut out a piece of the fabric of the dresses that she had made for me and shared why she had made that particular dress. It was fun to look at them while I was growing up. I think it is so important to write the stories behind the picture and memorabilia. I tell all my getting started classes that it you are not in the room the book has to tell the story for you. My Grandmother and Mother both did this and wow it sure helps keep the history going. Now my Daughter and granddaugher both share this tradition.

I do each of my albums in themes. Some are chronological and some are by events. I love how the color sets the tone and the mood of my pictures. My favorite part is to add the ebellishments especially the bling, after I have created my layout with a title and journaling.

Catch the bug with scrapbooking and share it with your family and friends!

Don't Forget! Join us Saturday Night!

Get’em Done Scrappy: Do you have projects started that just need a block of time to complete? Many of us do! Bring your unfinished business and join us for a great night of completion! Bonus prize for the one who completes the most unfinished business. (Patti) 6 pm – 12 am $10

Blog Spotlight: Instructor and Design Team Member Janet Bradshaw!

Hi, my name is Janet and I am a scrapper. I've been scrapbooking as long as I can remember. I have small scrapbooks and journals from my junior high and high school. I worked on the school yearbook staff and even worked my way up to co-editor for two years. When I went on my Senior trip to England, I created a scrapbook. Today those scrapbook looks very antique, but they captured the moments, the memories and the magic.

I took up the new hobby back in 1998 and shortly after that discovered Scrapbook Fever. I sent an e-mail inquiring about a weekend position and thus began my long affiliation with the fantastic Fever Team. I worked weekends and taught classes for a couple of years while my daughter was younger. Then I took off a few years from the store and returned in 2004 when I was laid off from my desk job. I worked the sales floor and I began teaching again. The saddest day I remember at Scrapbook Fever was two years ago when I had to say "I'm going back to work full time and will only be able to teach". I miss the store, I miss the employees and I miss the customers, but I stay close by filling the role of the class coordinator. If only there were more hours a day for scrapbooking!

My passion is scrapping heritage photos and stories, then I remember that "today's memories" will one day be heritage photos for future generations. I scrapbook all aspects of my life and the life around me. I love photography, but even more than that, I love to scrapbook the fantastic shots that Michael takes. He has such talent that he makes my job of scrapping a breeze. My greatest reward from scrapbooking is learning from others and sharing ideas. Our instructors, employees, design team members and customers are so very talented. A special thanks to all of you for helping me become the scrapper I am today! -- Janet Bradshaw, 2007

Blog Spotlight: Design Team Member Staci Linson!

I have discovered that I am a bit of an anomaly in the scrapbooking world... an 'odd bird' if you will... I am (voice lowered to a whisper) 'caught up' on my scrapbooking! As I sit here in mid-October, I have finished most of my September layouts, and have them tucked away in albums. I know there are others of you like me out there, but we can't really speak (or crow!) too loudly about it... we are among the "Fast Scrappers Anonymous". No one likes to hear about how we've already scrapbooked the trip to the pumpkin patch that our family took last week!

Now before you dismiss me as someone who has "too much time on their hands" (yes, I've heard that before!)... please note that I do have three active children (ages 7, 5 & 3), a husband, piles of laundry, a house to clean, and something that my hubby likes to call my "little volunteering problem".

But amongst all the craziness of my daily routine, my scrapbook table is my quiet spot to regroup, create.... and bust through a few scrapbook pages while the memories are still fresh in my mind! And I have a few tricks to share to help you become a faster, more "caught up" scrapbooker, too.

1. Scrapbook in small increments.
Seriously, who doesn't love a weekend scrapbook retreat?!! But, if you're like me, those are too few and too far between... so you have to scrapbook when you can. Have 30 minutes when your kids are napping? Pick out pictures and papers for your next layout. Leave those out on your scrapbook table, and when you can get back to it, start the next step. If you can do it in smaller bits, you won't feel so overwhelmed when you finally have a chance to sit down for a longer period.

2. Pass off the scrapbooking to someone else.
Even my little ones love to make pages for their scrapbooks. I give them acid free cardstock, and my markers, and have them draw a picture of whatever holiday we want to document for their albums (Halloween, Easter, etc.) Put one picture of them on the page, and voila! And guess which ones my kids want to show off to Grandma? The ones I make with the newest paper products and loads of cute embellishments? Guess again! :-)

3. Use what you have.
No, I'm not saying you have to cut back on your trips to Scrapbook Fever! Just challenge yourself to try to finish a page with the items that you already have. Don't get caught in the trap of... "if I just had a different color of brad (you know, polished nickel, instead of silver), it would be perfect!" There is nothing worse than a scrapbook table full of half-finished layouts that are lacking that one 'crucial element'.

4. Don't put off journaling.
Okay, I changed my mind...there is something worse than half-finished layouts... beautifully completed layouts with no journaling because you're going to 'come back to it later'. There's something so satisfying about being able to put a layout in my album, knowing that it is finished (journaling and all!)

5. Finally, just let it go....
That's right. Sometimes you just have to move on to the next layout, even if you're not 100% satisfied with a page. I honestly have never gone back and re-done a page for my scrapbooks. This is the way I look at it: Halloween will be back around in another 364 days, and I have the chance to try for a 'perfect' page then.

I mean seriously, with the kids, the husband, the carpool, and the homeroom mom meetings, who has time for 'perfect'?!! Sometimes its better just to be perfectly.... done.

Blog Spotlight: Instructor and Fever Team Member Pam Sivage!

In Pam's own words: My turn to blurb about myself! One thing I get asked a lot is where do I get my ideas. I scrap lift a lot, one layout can turn into an entire album, something just sparks my idea cells! Sadly for me most of the ideas come in the wee hours of the morning when I should be sleeping, once the idea crawls into my head I am done for the rest of the night! I usually don't have a hard and fast rule when I sit down to start an album, I might have an idea but I never know how it is going to end up until the end! My scrapbook room looks like a tornado went through until the very last piece is put into the album! Then I do clean it up and start over! Every once in a while I do throw in a few layouts just to keep up but my real passion is mini albums! I love that you can finish them, give them as fun gifts or just keep them as a memory of a very special day! I keep several very special "leftover" boxes that have bits and pieces of stickers and when I do an album they get used! If it looks like it needs a home on that page it goes there! I am horrible about using patterned paper scraps in my albums...I have them and I don't know know why I don't but I just seem to start with a series of patterned paper and work from there! My friend Janet thought my box full of chipboard was a total unorganized disaster....it is but there is just something I really like about digging through the pieces of chipboard and the little snippets of stickers to complete my idea!!

Design Team Member Spotlight: Vicki Flinchum!

We are so amazed and pleased with what our talented Design Team members come up with each month and thought you'd enjoy getting to know them a bit better. Our first artist is Vicki Flinchum. Here is her thoughtful and moving answer to the question, "Why do you scrapbook?" Have you ever considered that question? What would your answer be?

Why I Started Scrapbooking

All my life I've been an arts and crafts kinda person - painting, drawing, decorating, making things. But the one thing I never gave much thought to was scrapbooking. My sister in law was a CM consultant and buried me in presents of albums, paper, and embellishments for many a year. But I stubbornly resisted, thinking there really wasn't much in scrapbooking to interest me. In late 2002 and into 2003 my perspective changed dramatically. . .as did my life. I remarried, watched my baby sister get married, got pregnant with my first child, buried my favorite uncle and my best friend - my Mom, had a baby boy and became a fulltime stepmom to my husband's 4 1/2 year old daughter. Suddenly pictures and the stories behind them became paramount.

When my mother died, I inherited a box of pictures, letters, poems, and memorabilia. There were no scrapbooks, no dates, times, places, people or events on the backs of photos. Though I have a lifetime of memories in this box, many of them will be forever lost to me and my children, because my mother didn't think scrapbooking was important.

After inheriting that box, I decided I wasn't going to leave my family the same thing when I was gone. So I began taking pictures, saving momentos and jotting notes. Though I had little time the first two to three years with kids, I've tried hard to make up for it ever since. I have pursued scrapbooking with a vengeance. It has become my creative outlet. As the self appointed historian of our family, I carry my camera in my purse at all times.

If you scrapbook now, hooray for you!!!!! It is important! If you don't scrapbook, it's never too late to start.

Vicki
